Recently, thanks to my involvement at the Product Review Place, I was sent a sample of Florastor and Florastor Kids to review. Florastor is currently the world's #1 selling probiotic, and has been sold internationally for more than 50 years. Florastor is a yeast-based probiotic designed to aid in the growth of good microorganisms in intestines while removing disease-causing microorganisms. Research has shown that the active ingredient in Florastor, S. boulardii appears to be effective in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea. There is also some evidence that Florastor and Florastor Kids may be helpful in the prevention and management of traveler's diarrhea, C. difficile infections, acute diarrhea, and some chronic inflammatory intestinal conditions.
Florastor is a product that I will definitely plan to take in situations when I am going to be taking antibiotics, since antibiotics also wipe out good intestinal flora while taking care of the bugs. I would also use this product for times when I am traveling to areas where I would be likely to get a case of traveler's diarrhea, as Florastor is reported to help with that. For my kids, I would definitely consider using the Florastor Kids supplement if they were taking antibiotics.
It is VERY important to remember a few things with these and all other dietary supplements. 1) Please, please check with your doctor first if you have any sort of medical condition or are taking a medication for a chronic health issue. Although Florastor has a lot of years of use and appears to be generally very safe, there are some health conditions in which Florastor should not be used. You and your doctor need to talk and make sure that you do not fall into that category. 2) When you go in for doctor's appointments and your doctor asks you to give him/her a list of the medications you are taking, include any and all vitamins, probiotics, and other dietary supplements on the list. They need to know all the information to help you get and stay healthy.
You can purchase Florastor and Florastor kids at most pharmacies, usually in the stomach section, but ask the pharmacist if you have trouble locating it! Florastor is available in bottles of 10 capsules for 49.95, 50 capsules for $39.95 or a 20-capsule blister pack for $21.95. Florastor Kids is available in a box of 10 powder packets for $11.95 or a box of 20 powder packets for $19.95.
