Although breastmilk is best for babies, there are times when formula becomes necessary for many children. Vivian has recently started having soy formula as part of her daily diet, which means that I'm once again hitting the stores and comparison shopping to try to find the best price on formula. When my older child was using formula, we pretty much exclusively bought store brand formula- the ingredients were identical when I compared them side-by-side, and the store-brand formula was usually around $10 cheaper per can. That kind of price difference really adds up when you're buying several cans of formula per month. I found the same thing to be true when I went to get Vivian's formula this week, so the formula that made its way into my shopping cart was store-brand formula.
We buy our formula at Fred Meyer, but most major retailers like Kmart, Walmart, and Target also have their own brands. And like all formula, these store brand options all meet the same basic nutritional specifications, as mandated by the FDA.
One thing that I haven't ever been able to do with my store-brand purchases is use a coupon- I seem to get lots for namebrand formulas, but never have seen one the elusive store-brand formula coupon. Until now! If you visit Baby Formula Quiz and answer seven random questions about baby formula, you can get a $3 coupon and you can also enter to win free formula. I got a 6 out of 7 on the quiz, not too bad! You can also get a coupon by visiting storebrandformula.com and filling out the name/address form. Money saved is great, especially on things that we use so much of!
