Book review and giveaway (closed): The Heart Mender

Congrats to my winner: skgaff

When I first saw the summary of The Heart Mender, by Andy Andrews, I knew it was a book that I wanted to read.  It fell into my favorite category of books- historical fiction. Or so I thought at the time. So when I received the book, I was a little confused to see the categories "self-help/motivational/inspirational" on the back, rather than historical fiction.  Then I began reading it and discovered that this incredible story is in fact a true one! As a novel this book would have been amazing and a great story, but as the account of an experience that happened to real people it means so much more.

The book is set in 1942 Alabama, during the early part of World War II. At this time German submarines were being sent to the Gulf of Mexico to disrupt transport of goods and fuel from the US to troops overseas.  Through a series of events a German sailor ends up washed up on the beach of Alabama and is found by a woman who recently lost her husband to the war.  This is a story of how they managed to forgive and get past the losses of loved ones to love again, and that makes up the main part of the story. But the book also has great stories about friendships and faith acceptance of people who look and speak differently, and even adventure and intrigue as the main characters have to escape from a Nazi that's chasing them!

I thought this book was well-written and definitely worth a read. The characters are interesting, the story moves quickly, and I even learned about a part of history that I'd never encountered before.  I really liked the "where are they now" section at the end of the book- it's great to read more about how the story turned out for everyone long-term. If you love history and stories of encouragement and hope, definitely take a look at this book.

(Note- this book was originally released a few years ago under the title Island of Saints. It has been updated to include a "Where Are They Now" section.)

I have an extra copy to give to one of you! I'm mailing this one out myself, so I'm going to have to limit it to US mailing addresses, please.

I want to read this because I love fiction that captures the spirit and mood of a historical period or event and makes it fun to read! My father served in World War II (I was a late baby - had to throw that in!) and I have always been fascinated by it.
Thanks for the giveaway!
