Giveaway closed- congrats to: Michelle; Kathleen; Sean
When, thanks to my involvement at the Product Review Place, I received a copy of What to Wear For the Rest of Your Life, I wasn't sure that this book would apply to my life. The book is directed mainly to women in their "second adulthood", those going from being soccer moms to empty-nesters, dealing with menopause and all the body changes that come along with that, and figuring out what clothing fits their new lifestyles. I'm a 33-year-old stay-at-home mom, so I was a little skeptical that I would learn anything relevant to me.
Let me tell you- I learned a lot! This book is more than just a discussion of fashion, it's the story of one woman's journey from empty nested divorcee to a confident, well-dressed, comfortable-in-her-own-skin woman. The chapters of the book do deal with practical tips on what to wear and what not to wear, but they go so far beyond that. The author, Kim Johnson Gross, spends a lot of time talking about confidence and figuring out what makes YOU happy and what clothes YOU feel comfortable and powerful in. The book is full of great quotes about fashion and stories of people who have succeeded in finding their style, no matter what their age.
Besides confidence and empowerment, the main topic of discussion in this book is "finding your feel-good closet". The author offers great advice for how to find this and maintain it for years to come- without running out and buying a whole new wardrobe right now. Beyond this main topic, there are discussions of skin care and makeup and dressing for special occasions- as well as so much more.
Like I said earlier- I'm 33, so I'm not in this "second adulthood" yet. But I have recently transitioned from being a career woman to a stay-at-home mom, and my body has changed considerably from what it was before I had two babies in under two year. And I think that's pretty common- life changes quickly for many of us, and often our wardrobes and perspectives on style don't keep up. I really enjoyed reading this book and when I finished it I felt encouraged and empowered. I highly recommend it for anyone who needs some style guidance that will be a real lifestyle change, not just a wardrobe change. I particularly think it would be a great read for women who are in this second part of their lives- it's very honest but very hopeful all at once!
