Review: Recess Monkey CD

First off, I have to admit, I'm a bit of a science nerd. Okay, I'm a giant science nerd. I'm also a giant Star Trek fan, so I utterly and completely loved the newest kids' CD that we received- The Final Funktier by Recess Monkey. The CD is fun and energetic with a great science/space theme running throughout.

Recess Monkey is a band that's made up of three Seattle school teachers. I would love to be in these teachers' classes if their teaching is half as entertaining as their music! The lyrics of the songs went a bit over my kids' heads (the CD is designed for those 3-7 years of age and my kids are under that), but they loved the tunes and I loved the music and the lyrics both.  The press release that I received described the music as "high-energy fun and new wave grooves". I wasn't sure how to best describe it, but after I read that description, I totally agreed. It is the perfect CD to have on during a long day stuck at home- from the first song to the last it had us dancing and singing and generally having a good time.

My absolute favorite song is track #4- Science Fair. It brought back so many memories of science fairs in the school gym when I was a kid! Being an older sibling (of a brother that turned out to be a lovely person, eventually), I also laughed a lot at "My brother is a satellite"- so much truth in one kids' song! I thought all the songs were fun though, from a silly song about a space elevator, to a song that reminds kids to wear sunglasses and sunscreen, to another that makes booster seats fun!

The Final Funktier releases on June 15th and can be purchased at the Recess Monkey website,,,, the, or iTunes.  This is Recess Monkey's 6th CD- visit their website to hear some of the songs from this album and some of their other albums as well!

Seattle-area people- Recess Monkey performs all over the area, fairly often, according to their show page. They will even be at Folklife Festival, performing on Sunday, May 30th at 11:40 AM!

Disclosure: I received a copy of this CD to listen to and review for myself. I was not compensated in any other way and all opinions posted here are mine and mine alone.
