Congrats to my winner: Sarah Osborne
There is one surefire way to tell that I love a book- check my online library account to see if I've put holds on all of the author's other books! That is the case with She Walks In Beauty- as soon as I finished the last page of this book, I logged on to see what else the author, Siri Mitchell, had written.
Here's some information on the book:
When I was younger, I read a lot of historical romance novels, and was always caught up in the romance and glamor of the lives. But I never really stopped to think about what life must have been like for women who lived in eras when they had no rights. This book was really interesting and eye-opening for me- the main character, Clara, is a highly intelligent woman who dreams of education and travel, but whose only purpose in life in the eyes of her family and society, is to marry well and spend her life making small talk. All while being laced tightly into a corset that prevents her from doing things like breathing or eating without pain and sickness!
For a young society woman seeking a favorable marriage, so much depends on her social season debut. Clara Carter has been given one goal: secure the affections of the city's most eligible bachelor. Debuting means plenty of work--there are corsets to be fitted, dances to master, manners to perfect. Her training soon pays off, however, as celebrity's spotlight turns Clara into a society-page darling.Yet Clara soon wonders if this is the life she really wants. Especially when she learns her best friend has also set her sights on Franklin De Vries. When a man appears who seems to love her simply for who she is and gossip backlash turns ugly, Clara realizes it's not just her marriage at stake--the future of her family depends on how she plays the game.
I thought that this book was wonderfully written and that the author has a real gift for description and getting the reader into the mind and life of the main character. I despaired along with Clara when there seemed no way out, and rejoiced with her when things went well. There is a Christian message in this book, but it's very subtle and nicely weaved into the larger storyline.
