Review: Time Out To Rock!

Yesterday my family went for a drive after church, up to see the beautiful Snoqualmie Falls. Snoqualmie is a great destination- if you're in the area, I can't recommend it highly enough! But that's beside the point. As we started driving, I turned on the radio, to NPR, so that my husband and I could listen to some of the Sunday afternoon shows. However, Ethan had other plans and started yelling "dance, dance!" from the backseat. Silly us, we'd tried to listen to something other than his new favorite album- Time Out To Rock, by The Not-Its.

The Not-Its are another fabulous Seattle music group. Apparently Seattle has become quite the breeding ground for fabulous kids' music! Here's some info on the group, from their webpage:
Meet The Not-Its! – Seattle’s newest, most rockin' band making music for children. With the success of their debut album, We Are The Not-Its! released June 2009, it’s clear they are on a mission to make kids dance, with up-tempo, power-pop hits families will love.
Featuring the vocals of Sarah Shannon (of lauded ‘90s indie-pop band Velocity Girl), The Not-Its! combine crunchy guitars with smooth, four-part harmonies, all nestled within
“fantastic danceable pop gems about gettin’ fancy, birthday parties, bath time and intergalactic
play dates.
Thankfully, my husband and I also quite like this album, so we didn't mind playing it again, and soon we were all happily humming along and car dancing to the catchy tunes on this new album.  The first time I listened to it, I was surprised by how much of a rock album it really was.  The name of the album is right on- when you listen, it's going to be time for you to ROCK!!!

I think this is a great album- the music is fun to listen to, and kids wont even notice that they're being taught important life lessons. They'll learn things like the importance of being nice to the new kid in school, not being upset by things that happen accidentally, accepting differences in others, and adjusting your perspective on a day of bad luck.  As a mom, my favorite song is definitely the last one on the album, "Hollow Tree". It's a gorgeous song from a mom to her child and made me cry when I heard it.

As for my kids, when they listen to these songs, they dance, or sway in their carseats and wave their arms, and smile so much. The CD is for ages 3-7, but my family ranges in age from 1-42 and we all love it! Time Out To Rock will be available in July 2010. You can purchase it online at The Not-Its! webpage, or at, and

Local people- remember that The Not-Its will be playing a free concert on July 30th. Click here for my post with all the details.
