Before I got married and had kids, I survived primarily on frozen dinners and meals that required an absolute minimum of preparation. Not the healthiest lifestyle, but one that worked for me. Then I woke up one day (or so it seemed) and had a houseful of people reliant on me for their meals. The problem here is that I really dislike cooking, so dinnertime is always the most stressful part of my day.
So I knew that I just had to take the opportunity to review the newly updated 50th Anniversary Edition of The I Hate to Cook Book, by Peg Bracken. This is my kind of cookbook, for sure!
This cook book is great- the author is funny and provides recipes that are simple to make and that will result in a well-fed, happy family. As the author's daughter points out in the foreword, many of the recipes are definitely from the days before worries about clogged arteries and cholesterol, but substitutions can easily be made to make most of the recipes more figure-friendly.
The book goes beyond just simple recipes though and will actually provide you with some good laughs to diffuse your "what-to-make-for-dinner" tension. Many of the comments made by the author are hidden inside the recipe, so will make you laugh at their unexpected appearance. Daniel kept looking at me oddly when I would laugh and saying "I thought you were reading a cookbook?"
I appreciate how the book is neatly arranged to make it easy to find the exact recipe or situation that is relevant to me. Chapter headings are also giggle-inducing, ranging from "Company's Coming... or your back's to the wall", "Desserts...or people are too fat anyway", to my favorite "Potluck Suppers...or how to bring the water for the lemonade". Love it! Whatever the chapter, you'll love the ideas inside. I have so many recipes marked with post-it notes, and I know this book is going to be providing me great ideas for a long time to come.
