Congrats to my winner: mrsshukra
When I was a kid my family had a lot of traditions, but none was more important than family dinner time. Every evening you would find my parents, my brother and I gathered around the dinner table, sharing a meal. It was such a good time for us to talk over our days and stay close, despite our busy schedules. Now that my kids are getting older, my husband and I have been talking a lot about doing a better job with this- we know it's an important habit to get into. Now that I've read The Family Dinner, by Laurie David, I'm even more determined and inspired to prioritize our family dinner time!
I've been trying to figure out how to describe this book in my review, since it's a bit of everything. The subtitle of the book is "great ways to connect with your kids, one meal at a time", and that pretty much sums up the book better than anything I could come up with. It's been a very long time since I read a book with so much great information in it. The Family Dinner starts out with an introduction by the author, talking about how she came to develop her family's dinner time habit. It then continues on with a chapter discussing research about the importance of family dinner time and all the positive effects that result from it.
There are also chapters in the book with fast recipes, ideas for making dinner together at the table, make-ahead recipes, discussions of taking care of the environment, ideas for table conversations, things to read around the table and so much more. Each chapter contains even more than its main topic and also has great quotes, small boxes of dinner time ideas, and interviews with famous people about family dinner time. The pictures and the graphics are very nicely done, and everything is enjoyable to look at. Even if you only have time to read a bit of this book at a time, you will be flooded with inspiration and ideas for making your family dinner time a success.
Life is busy these days, and we're all so plugged in to technology and disconnected from each other. So I think family dinner time is even more vital in this time than it ever has been before. If you agree and would like some ideas on how to really make your family dinner time work, whatever your situation, check this book out!
