Inside the heart of this stay-at-home mom lives a glamorous woman longing to escape. Not to escape my family, but to escape my dull daily wardrobe of jeans and boring shirts and dress up in heels and skirts and pearls. I know I probably wouldn't have liked in the 1950s and 1960s, but I watch shows like Mad Men and drool over the outfits that the women wear. So I knew I needed to read The Fashion File: Advice, Tips and Inspiration from the Costume Designer of Mad Men, by Janie Bryant. Here's a bit about the book, from the Hachette Book Group website:
From Joanie's Marilyn Monroe-esque pencil skirts to Betty's classic Grace Kelly cupcake dresses, the clothes worn by the characters of the phenomenal Mad Men have captivated fans everywhere. Now, women are trading in their khakis for couture and their pumas for pumps. Finally, it's hip to dress well again. Emmy-Award winning costume designer Janie Bryant offers readers a peek into the dressing room of Mad Men, revealing the design process behind the various characters' looks and showing every woman how to find her own leading lady style--whether it's vintage, modern, or bohemian. This book was everything that I hoped it would be. It's a little bit of a behind-the-scenes look at Mad Men and the wardrobe design, a little bit of a history of fashion, and a whole lot of inspiration for every woman to find her real, glamorous, true-to-self style. I loved this book because it doesn't talk about what to wear if you're a "perfect" size and shape, it's about being fabulous just as you are. There are lots of great photographs and drawings in the book, of fashionable women and of great outfits. The book includes lots of tips on playing up your good assets, and frequently reiterates the vital importance of good undergarments!
Each chapter of the book wraps up with a few fun facts in the "cocktail chatter" section and has a handy checklist to help us remember what we learned in the chapter and easily put it into practice. I really liked the section on comfort versus chic, which contains some easy switches of casual, comfortable clothes for more stylish, but still practical options. There's information on dressing for every occasion, a section on vintage clothing, a section on accessories, and a great section on the end for the man in your life!
If your current style could use a little inspiration, or if you just love reading about fashion- or if you just love the fashion of Mad Men, this book is a must-read. Visit this website for information on where to find a copy for yourself.
