Congrats to my winners: Splendwhore; Stephanie
Yep, I'm once again trying to lose weight. Things were going pretty well for a while there, but then I had a massively stressful fall and early winter, and unfortunately coped by eating. WAY too much. So now I'm trying to get in gear again! Fortunately I have a new tool in my diet tool belt, a fabulous new book by Neal D. Barnard, MD, called 21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart. Here's a bit about the book, from the publisher's website:
For years, Dr. Neal D. Barnard has been at the forefront of cutting-edge research on what it really takes to lose weight and restore the body to optimal health. Now, with his proven, successful program, in just three short weeks you'll get fast results-drop pounds, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, improve blood sugar, and more. With Dr. Barnard's advice on how to easily start a plant-based diet, you'll learn the secrets to reprogramming your body quickly: · Appetite reduction: Strategically choose the right foods to naturally and easily tame your appetite. This book is really well laid out, with three easy-to-follow sections. The first part covers the basics of the diet- discussing why it works, the effects on the body of the plant-based diet, foods that are good to eat, vitamins, foods to avoid, ideas for what to eat when you're out at a restaurant, and more. Part two of the book is a great day-by-day walk through the diet. It's nice to have the motivation and tips for each day- not so much information at once that it's overwhelming, and good encouragement for when you're in the middle of the 21-day process. Finally, the book wraps up with a menu and recipe section, a discussion of ingredients that may be new to the reader, and cooking tips.
I like this book a lot. It's easy to read, it's motivating, and its realistic. The author has ideas for different lifestyles and ways to fit this way of eating into everyone's life. Whether you love to cook or love to eat out or love to use pre-made foods at home, there are ideas and tips for how to make it work. I've only been doing the 21-Day kickstart for a few days, but I'm already down a few pounds and I'm feeling better too! Even though my husband certainly doesn't need to lose weight, he's planning to join me on the diet soon, since he likes the idea of the heart-healthy aspect of a plant-based diet.
