Lately I've been reading lots of serious, thought-provoking books, and, honestly, it was starting to make me very tired. So I was thrilled to finally finish those books and start Tina Fey's new book, Bossypants. It was just what I needed! Here's a bit about Bossypants, from the publisher's website.
Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update," before "Sarah Palin," Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV.
She has seen both these dreams come true. This book would be best described as a collection of short essays that cover different events in Ms. Fey's life. Topics discussed are varied, ranging from her childhood, her honeymoon, and being a working mother to discussions of her career at Second City in Chicago, on SNL and now at the show 30 Rock. I found the chapters talking about her comedy career and the fight for women to have a bigger role in comedy to be very enlightening, and loved the stories that she shared about her coworkers and their early careers. I also really enjoyed the stories of SNL and all the behind-the-scenes looks at her pre-2010 election role on SNL portraying Sarah Palin.
At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon -- from the beginning of this paragraph to this final sentence.
Ms. Fey's writing is very funny and self-deprecating, and as I read the book I felt like I was sitting and listening to a friend tell me funny stories. I enjoyed getting to know Ms. Fey more through this book and thought it was all very fun and entertaining. I should note that there is some language and crude humor here and there in the book. If you're a big Tina Fey fan, or if you're just looking for a funny, fast read, definitely pick up a copy of this book!
