Seattle-area: Giant Magnet Festival (International Children's Festival) is going on now!

My family had the opportunity to attend another great event tonight- the Opening Night celebrations for the 25th (and final!) Annual Giant Magnet/International Children's Festival. We attended last year as well and loved all the performers, so the bar was set high for tonight. But we did not leave disappointed, everything was fabulous, and I am sure the rest of the week will be great as well!  Here's a bit about the Giant Magnet Festival:

This season Giant Magnet celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the International Children’s Festival – 25 years of introducing young audiences to the world – its people, customs and cultures – through the performing arts. Giant Magnet explored the globe to bring an all-star lineup of performers to Seattle Center May 10-14, 2011 and The Broadway Center for the Performing Arts in Tacoma on May 16, 2011 for this celebratory year’s Festival.

Through a special partnership with China’s Ministry of Culture, the Festival will showcase three extraordinary companies from China that provide an intimate look at a range of cultural heritages and art forms. The Festival will also feature authentic world music from Ecuador and India, storytelling from Tasmania and exceptional companies from the USA.
We saw excerpts tonight from the performances of four of the nine groups that are taking part in Giant Magnet.  The groups we saw were Tigerstyle, the Guangdong Province Puppet Troupe, the Shaanxi Folk Art Theater and the Sichuan Opera Company. All four put on amazing performances that captured the attention of the adults and the kids (2 and almost 4 years old) alike.  Theater  My son was on the edge of his seat for the Shaanxi Folk Art Theater's performance, and told me that he really liked all the others as well. My husband and I completely agreed with his opinion!

Here are a few of my photos from the performance (I was in the back, so they're not as clear as I'd like, and I wasn't able to get good photos of the really fast-moving performances, but hopefully they'll give you a hint of what to expect!)

You can find more information about the performances that will be at Giant Magnet this week at this link. Performances will be taking place this week, May 10-14 in Seattle and on May 16 in Tacoma.  If you want to attend a performance on Saturday, May 14, use the code 25anniversary to get $2 off your tickets. Regular ticket prices are only $7 for kids and $10 for adults, so it's a very affordable family outing!

This is the last year for the Giant Magnet Festival, so if this is something you've been thinking about doing, definitely go this week!

Disclosure: My family and I attended the Opening Night Festivities, thanks to the Giant Magnet Festival. We were not compensated in any other way and all opinions posted here are mine and mine alone.
