App review: Arthur Christmas Movie Storybook

We've recently added another fun app to our iPods- the Arthur Christmas Movie Storybook! Here's a bit about this, from a press release that I received:

iStoryTime Launches Arthur Christmas Movie Storybook for iPhone and iPad
Santa Barbara, Calif. / Frankfurt - November 30, 2011 - StoryTime, the largest library of mobile children's book apps, today announced that the Arthur Christmas Movie Storybook is now available for iPhone and iPad for $3.99. The storybook app features several in-story activities that allow the reader to be immersed in the magic of the Arthur Christmas story as well as to discover exclusive content from the feature film. The app is based on the new 3D, CG-animated movie Arthur Christmas from Aardman for Sony Pictures Animation, in theaters November 23.

Arthur Christmas is an interactive storybook app that at last reveals the incredible, never-before-seen answer to every child's question: "So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?" The answer: Santa's exhilarating, ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole. But at the heart of the film is a story with the ingredients of a Christmas classic - a family in a state of comic dysfunction and an unlikely hero: Santa's youngest son, Arthur. When this amazing operation misses one child out of hundreds of millions, Arthur, the least capable Claus, embarks on a hilarious, exciting rogue mission against the clock with his politically incorrect grandfather Grandsanta and a giftwrapping-obsessed elf named Bryony, to deliver the last present before Christmas morning dawns.

Available in the Apple App Store for $3.99, the storybook features original content from the feature film, including images and character voices and parents and their children can experience the adventure before or after seeing the movie in the box office. In-story activities include:

  • Make Arthur Look Like Santa: Apply digital beard stickers to Arthur's face for a hilarious Santa-like snow costume
  • Countdown to Christmas Meter: Digitally track down to the second just how close you're getting to the big day
  • Lull the Lions to Sleep: Swipe back and forth on the screen to help Arthur distract the hungry lions so he can finish his quest to deliver the lost present
  • Gift Wrapping: Help the elves wrap a bike
  • Narration Options: Read to Me, Read to Myself and Auto Play
The Arthur Christmas Movie Storybook app brings it all to life in a convenient, mobile format.

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
* Requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later

We haven't seen the Arthur Christmas movie yet, but still really enjoyed reading along with the story on the iPod. The graphics and sound are great, and the story kept my attention and Ethan's attention nicely. Ethan and I both laughed at many places in the story- it's very cute. I really like that there are three different options for the narration- autoplay, read to me and read it myself. That makes it accessible for pretty much all ages and reading levels. I wasn't crazy about the extra games, since they were fairly pointless, but they might appeal to a younger audience.

All in all, my family enjoyed this storybook, and if you're looking for a good Christmas story for your iPhone/iPad, this is a good one to check out.

Disclosure: I received this storybook app to review for myself. I was not compensated in any other way and all opinions posted here are mine and mine alone.
