To be their best, children need to feel loved. But if you and your child speak different love languages, your affection might get lost in translation, affecting the child’s attitude, behavior, and development. Dr. Gary Chapman’s groundbreaking Five Love Languages series has helped millions of couples communicate love more clearly, and Dr. Ross Campbell M.D. has applied the innovative system to children as well. The 5 Love Languages of Children gives practical suggestions for learning how your children interpret love and creating a sense of security in which they can thrive. Now with over 1,000,000 copies sold! This is an excellent, excellent book. It covers the five love languages in depth, then goes on to discuss how to discover your child's primary love language, the role the love languages play in discipline and learning, and speaking the love languages in single-parent families and in marriage. The book also contains The Love Language Mystery Game, to help discover your child's primary love language.
I really like the positivity of this book. It's encouraging and motivating and really inspired me to stop and think about how I communicate with the kids and with my husband. To me, the primary message of this book, and of the love languages in general is to stop, take a minute and think about how to communicate most effectively with another person in a way that they will best hear and respond to. It's a book that makes you stop and consider your own attitude and approaches to others, rather than trying to 'fix' someone's behavior.
The book is full of useful tips and tools and suggests specific approaches for certain age groups, which is very helpful. The authors do note that it's hard to determine what a child's primary love language is before the age of five, and my kids are both younger than that, but it's never too early to start thinking about these things and paying attention! And, as the authors note, it's never too late either, so no matter what age your kids are, I highly recommend reading this book.
