After finding out about this DVD series, I bought the first one. When it arrived, I sat down to watch it with the kids. Within minutes we were laughing and learning- I've had years of Bible education in church, college and other places, and I still learned new things (or was reminded of things I'd forgotten) from these shows. As soon as we finished watching the first Buck Denver show, I immediately hopped on the computer and bought more. We've now watched volumes 1-6 (multiple times each!) and enjoyed them all and learned from them all.
What’s in the Bible?Buck Denver Asks…What’s in the Bible? is a new DVD series from VeggieTales® creator Phil Vischer designed to walk kids and families through the entire Bible. The complete old testament: DVDs 1-9 (Genesis – Malachi) along with Buck Denver Asks…Why Do We Call It Christmas? are available now, with more releasing soon!
Phil Vischer and Jellyfish LabsIn 1990, 24-year-old computer-animator Phil Vischer sat down to create a group of characters that could teach Christian values to kids in a delightfully different way. A tomato named Bob and a cucumber named Larry were born. VeggieTales would go on to revolutionize Christian filmmaking, selling more than 50 million videos and placing Phil’s faith-filled stories in one in every three American households with young children. Phil continues to pursue innovative new ways to integrate faith and storytelling through his new company, Jellyfish Labs. His projects include Jelly Telly, which provides faith-based daily programming via the internet at JellyTelly.com
As you would expect from Phil Vischer, the Buck Denver shows are funny as well as educational. In between explaining concepts like redemption and sin and how the canon of the Bible was determined, there are funny songs and characters that have questions and lots of opinions. There are references to modern culture- one of my favorite of those was when the character Michael mused over the fact that Dora the Explorer only seems to rescue the cute animals...
I've watched this show with adult friends of mine, with my husband, my kids and my parents. And in every case, the entire group enjoyed the show. My kids frequently request to re-watch Buck Denver DVDs, and we always are excited when a new one arrives at our door.
Yes, there are probably small details that not everyone will agree on- no show that discusses the Bible is going to be 100% what everyone agrees on. But overall, I haven't found anything that stands out to me as inaccurate or doctrinally unsound.
