Review: Seattle Children's Theatre presents The Wizard of Oz

Last night, after stopping by Winterfest at the Seattle Center Armory and enjoying everything that's going on there, we headed outside and walked a few steps to the Seattle Children's Theatre to see The Wizard of Oz. What a treat! Here's a bit about this musical, from the SCT website:
There’s no place like Seattle Children’s Theatre to be transported to the wondrous discoveries of the Emerald City and the characters of Oz. After a tornado sweeps Dorothy from her Kansas home, she encounters both wickedness and wonder, Wizard and Witch, Munchkin and Monkey. Dorothy and her newfound friends journey on a quest to find heart, courage, brains and most importantly, home.
 Age Recommendation:
Ages 5 and up - This classic tale of adventure inspires imaginations and reminds us of the power of self-confidence. Perilous escapes and scary characters might surprise young children.

Curriculum Connections: Courage, Wisdom, Compassion, Weather, Family, Quest, Self-Confidence, Reading, Adaptation
Running Time: 2 hours with an intermission
This show is recommended for those ages 5 and above, and there are some slightly scary elements, like the Wicked Witch appearing and disappearing and the flying monkeys and the Wizard's first couple of appearances.  Still, my kids (ages 5 and 3 1/2) sat through the whole thing and were quite taken by the performance! The flying monkeys were actually Ethan's favorite part. The kids did jump a little bit when things got loud and Ethan covered his ears on occasion, but as we walked home, they both commented on how much they enjoyed the play.

It's been years since I watched the movie version of The Wizard of Oz, and it was fun to see the movie come to life on stage in front of me. The actors did an excellent job of singing the familiar songs and acting out the iconic roles. The scenery was really great and brought the story to life.  There was lots of laughter throughout the play and tons of clapping at the happy ending.   All in all, it was a fun night out at the theatre with our kids.  If you're a big fan of The Wizard of Oz, definitely include a stop at Seattle Children's Theatre on your holiday list! It's on now through January 6, 2013. For tickets and more information, visit this link.

Disclosure: I received tickets for my family to attend this show. All opinions posted here are mine and mine alone.
