Jerry Spinelli’s popular book, Crash, comes to life in SCT’s final production of the 2012-2013 Season(Seattle, WA) – Crash, by popular Newbery Medal-winning author, Jerry Spinelli, who’s works have changed reluctant readers into avid fans, will debut with a world premiere on Seattle Children’s Theatre’s (SCT) stage in late April. Adapted by Y York (Afternoon of the Elves; Getting Near to Baby), hot-button issues like middle-school bullying and social hierarchy will be presented in a humorous yet identifiable way as SCT wraps up its 2012-2013 Season. Crash opens Friday, April 19, 2013 (with a public preview Thursday, April 18) and runs through May 19, 2013 in SCT’s Charlotte Martin Theatre, and will be directed by SCT Artistic Associate Rita Giomi.Whether it’s physical violence or verbal put downs, bullying is pervasive in schools and communities today. According to 2010 national statistics, 71 percent of students report bullying as an on-going problem, with arguably some of the strictest hierarchies operating within the strata of middle and high school social groups. The dynamics and relationships found in Crash play out in middle schools everywhere. While the issues surrounding bullying are often hard to discuss, SCT’s Crash is a must-see for all ages offering a funny, personal story with graphic novel-like sets that explores these issues in a way that resonates with adolescents.“Older students will really connect to these characters and their struggles with social hierarchy,” says SCT Artistic Director Linda Hartzell. “It’s a funny, moving story, affirming the simple truth that we must treat all people well.”Rita Giomi assembled a strong ensemble cast and design team with Quinn Franzen making his SCT debut as the title character, Crash Coogan. Joining him are Rio Codda, Kate Sumpter, Peter Crook, Emily Chisholm, Adam Standley, Todd Jefferson Moore and Beth DeVries. The cast is supported by the production team led by Scenic Designer Carey Wong (A Single Shard), Costume Designer Melanie Burgess, Lighting Designer Geoff Korf, Sound Designer Chris R. Walker, and Fight Choreographer Geoff Alm.Crash will be presented in SCT’s Charlotte Martin Theatre from April 18, 2013 through May 19, 2013. Seattle Children’s Theatre is located at 201 Thomas Street, under the Space Needle at Seattle Center. Tickets for Crash are $20 to $36 and may be purchased by calling the SCT Ticket Office at (206) 441.3322 or by visiting www.sct.org. Crash is recommended for ages 8 and up; this story of middle school taunting and cynicism, combined with the grandfather’s medical emergency might not be appropriate for younger children. The character of Crash also has insightful moments where he appears to talk to himself which may be confusing to kids under eight years of age.
