My 8-year-old son, Ethan, was once described by his school physical therapist as "the most competitive person she'd ever met." Everything in life is a competition for him. EVERYTHING. No matter how much we try to tell him otherwise. Unfortunately though, Ethan is (to be perfectly honest), not the most athletic or coordinated person, so he often loses his races and games, despite his best efforts. And this often results in some sort of pouting or crying incident. So I knew that I really needed to read him a new book called Win or Lose, I Love You! This book is written by one of my favorite Christian authors, Lysa Terkeurst.
The book arrived in the middle of a busy week, so I didn't have a chance to read it to the kids right away. They had fun paging through it at the table though and commented on the fun and colorful illustrations of Lulu (who is wearing a tutu, much like my daughter), Max (who resembles my son!) and the many animals in the forest. The book covers a field day in the forest and how the various animals handle both winning and losing.
Today is a rainy day in Seattle, so the kids and I snuggled in on the couch to read this book together. All of us loved the story and Vivian and I turned to Ethan at multiple points in time and smiled. He even raised his hand when I asked the kids who the most competitive character in the book reminded them of :) This is a really cute book with a sweet message about the importance of character and taking care of others above winning every competition. Ethan's still a little skeptical about this truth, but we'll keep reading him the book and hopefully it'll sink in eventually. At the end of the book, there is a page of Bible verses about winning and losing. These will be great ones to memorize with my kids!
I highly recommend this beautiful kids' book! Happy reading!
